Over the past few days, Ms. Barnett’s 8th grade science class has been learning about Human Impact on the environment. During these lessons, the breadth and impact of the wild fires in Australia had been all over the news. Ms. Barnett took this as a teaching moment to discuss with her students how the fires point to human impact especially its effect on the billions of wildlife. Moved by everything that they had seen and heard both on the news and in class, her students wanted to do something to help.

“At first we thought about making mittens for the Koalas,” stated Trent, “but then we realized there were lots of other people sending mittens and we didn’t want our work to go to waste.” And that’s how they settled on a bake sale.

Koala Bake SaleDuring lunch this week, 8th graders will be manning the bake sale table selling all types of goodies from brownies, to cupcakes, to chocolate chip cookies, and even koala cookies!

Money raised from the bake sale will go the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital. This hospital offers medical aid to koalas that have been seriously injured in the fires. They have also committed to building 100 water drinking stations for koalas and other wildlife in habitats that have been burnt in New South Wales. They have also established a Wild Koala breeding Program as the animal’s population has been decimated.

Keep up the great philanthropic work, Collier Middle School! The impact you are making is truly magnificent!
