For a select few Collier High School students, music class has been taken up a notch. New this year is a college level course on Avid Pro Tools—a music software that allows users to compose, record, edit, and mix music. Used by producers, musicians, and bands such as the Foo Fighters, Ricky Martin, and Junior Sanchez, as well as in creating the audio and video for DJ Hero and Guitar Hero, Pro Tools allows the user to create music faster and easier and allows you to collaborate with others quickly.

Taught by Collier’s Music Teacher and Certified Pro Tools Instructor, Mr. Frank Slater, students will learn the ins and outs of Pro Tools and will even have an opportunity to work with a client to get hands-on training. Upon successful completion of this accelerated course, students will be awarded a certification that validates their skills and provides them with a recognizable credential in the professional music industry.

Typically, the Pro Tools curriculum takes place over 2 years but Mr. Slater selected a handful of current Collier High School seniors to take part in an accelerated version of the course so that they will receive their certification prior to graduation. “Mr. Slater and this class made me interested in going to college for and getting a job editing music,” said Collier High School senior, Kent W. “My hope is to get a lot of students in this class to learn Pro Tools and to carry it over to other projects at Collier like the musical. The exposure to recorded sound versus live sound will provide them with further experience,” Mr. Slater said.

Keep up the great work and we can’t wait to tune and hear what you all have created!
